Why were we created?

Have you ever wondered why we were created? What is worship? How do we do it? Why do we do it?

You might have heard as a Christian “we are created to worship” or “we are created to serve God,” but is this true? We need to understand why we were created in order for us to know the fullness of God, and worship Him as He desires (more on this later). The truth is…

WE WERE CREATED TO BE LOVED BY GOD AND LOVED VERY WELL.

Until we understand that God created us to be loved we won't have the capacity to worship. All we have is the capacity to follow protocol (those of us raised in the church know how this goes!)

We can’t love well until we have been loved well. We love because he first loved us (1 John 4:19, NIV.) You were created so God could express love to you! Even if you never expressed it back. Love will always have an expression. Once we have encountered the unfailing love of God our heart begins to fill, and eventually, that love spills over toward our maker…this is called worship!

So How Do We Worship?

Some churches say we can have instruments, others say we need to sing hymns. Some ask “Can I wave flags?” or “Can I dance?”, etc. Worship in different churches and denominations will be expressed in many different ways, so what is the right way? Let’s see what Jesus has to say…

Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem… But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:21-42, NLT)

The point of worship is to pour out love towards God. It's not about which songs to sing, or how it looks, these are by-products. The main thing is expressing my love and adoration for who He is.

Worship is expressing our adoration and love toward God.

We can go through all the motions, and sing all the right songs, but until we know His love, we miss Him, and we miss what worship truly is about.

What does it mean to worship in spirit and in truth?

When you fall in love it demands expression! Jesus said it’s not about which mountain you worship on, God is looking for the heart.

…true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:23-24)

It means to worship God from the new born-again Spirit. We have been born again as a child of God (John 1:12-13), and it’s from this new reality that the Holy Spirit within us empowers us to worship the Father. The Spirit of God in us leads us into the truth of who God is and the fullness of His love for us (Rom 5:5, John 16:13). This is the heart we worship from.

so why were we created?

To be loved by God!

… and what is worship?

God being loved by us!
